Facing Our Evolving Terrorism Threat:  The Increase in Hate, Violence and Extremism
Speaker:  Ghada Wahdan, Criminal Intelligence Analyst, Division of Homeland Security
Body armor for firefighters is a symbol that times are changing.….the perceived neutrality of the American fire service is evaporating as we adopt equipment and tactics to protect ourselves.  What happened?  ISIS inspired attacks, the rise of reoccurring strains of racism and bigotry, fake news spreading unchecked via the internet…the internet has made it possible for hate and extremism to flood across our nation and the world.  Hate crimes, anti-Muslim attacks, anti-Semitic attacks & domestic terrorism are all increasing and the fire service is in the middle of the fight. A 2004 Rand Institute study noted that “Approximately 88,000 firefighters are injured due to violence against them each year and about 2,000 of their injuries are potentially life-threatening.”  This presentation will provide a disturbing perspective on the increasing and changing face of terrorism in the US and steps the fire service needs to take.
